WHEN ROCK BEATS TO THE RHYTHM OF RUNNING

If someone had imagined 20 years ago that Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker would spend his days running instead of smashing floors, they'd probably be called crazy. But here we are: the guy who used to be all adrenaline on drums now finds his biggest rush in running .

How did he go from the excesses of punk rock to miles and a healthy lifestyle? Grab your rock playlist and get ready for this story.

đŸ”„ The accident that changed everything

On September 19, 2008, Travis Barker was traveling on a private jet that crashed while attempting to take off in South Carolina. Of the six people on board, only he and his friend DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) survived.

Barker suffered third-degree burns over 70% of his body , spent three months in the hospital , and underwent 27 surgeries and multiple skin grafts.

In addition to physical pain, he also faced psychological trauma and an extreme fear of flying, which affected his musical career for years.

Like any good rocker, Barker found refuge in music . But something else came into play: running .

After my accident in 2008, over 70% of my body was burned, and doctors told me I might never be able to walk or play the drums like I used to. I was never an athlete or played sports, but I immediately felt the need to prove everyone wrong, including myself. -Travis-

đŸƒâ€â™‚ïž How running helped him recover

  • After the accident, Travis made radical changes in his life to improve his health and mental state:
✅ He became vegan , completely eliminating junk food.
✅ She adopted running and exercise as part of her recovery routine.
✅ He found in sports a way to channel stress and anxiety .

Running came into her life almost as an act of desperation. At first, it was just a way to clear her mind, but it ended up becoming her new addiction. What was once pure punk and wildness has now transformed into discipline, miles, and an unstoppable mindset .

I started with short walks and then started running every day. I felt a sense of calm and a dopamine rush every time I ran. I've done this for years and always start the day this way. I even run 5K every day before my shows when I'm on tour. -Travis-

Today, Barker is not only an avid runner, but has turned his passion into a movement: Run Travis Run , an initiative that inspires others to leave excesses behind and embrace the sport without losing the rock spirit. In July 2024, Travis organized his first similar event in Los Angeles, where his wife, Kourtney Kardashian, participated in a 5K race just months after giving birth. Travis praised her effort and determination, describing her as a "beast" for completing the race.

Last year, I ran my first half marathon and participated in a few 5K races. I loved how everyone, from all walks of life, ran together and supported each other. The running community is huge, and it really inspired me to create Run Travis Run as a way to bring like-minded people together. I want to motivate people to get outside and walk or run for a few hours, as well as to make healthy choices and create healthy habits. -Travis-

🎾 Running is also rock

If you think running is only for guys in fluorescent clothes and pop playlists, think again. Rock has always been synonymous with resilience, rebellion, and drive, and running has exactly the same energy.

It's no coincidence that other rockers have also found in sport a way to stay on their feet:

Rock isn't just about epic riffs and solos, it's also about hanging on, falling down, and getting back up again and again .

đŸ€˜ Running with a rockstar attitude

If Travis Barker's story teaches us anything, it's that rock doesn't die, it transforms. Today, the guy who once destroyed drum kits with the energy of a hurricane is proving that running can be as intense as a punk concert.

His next race is just around the corner on February 7, 2025 in New Orleans at AUDUBON PARK. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the LAFD Foundation and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition who are working hard to end the fires in Barker's hometown of Los Angeles.

So, the next time you go for a run, put aside the generic electronics and put on your favorite rock playlist.

Run like you're in the middle of a mosh pit, feel the rhythm in every stride, and remember: being a rocker doesn't mean self-destruction, it means resistance. đŸ”„đŸƒâ€â™‚ïžđŸŽž
